The Haawal flood barrier

FAQ – Choosing Between Haawal 90 cm and 120 cm

Which Haawal system should I choose – 90 cm or 120 cm?

It depends on the expected flood level and your site conditions. The 90 cm system is ideal for moderate floods, while the 120 cm system provides extra protection when water levels are uncertain or expected to be high.

Can the 90 cm and 120 cm barriers be combined in one setup?

Yes. Both systems can be connected and used together. This is practical if you have uneven terrain – using 120 cm sections where the ground is lower, and 90 cm where less protection is needed.

How much storage space does each system require?

The 90 cm system requires about 30% less storage space than the 120 cm system. Both are delivered on specially designed pallets (H x W x D = 125 x 100 x 125 cm) that make transport, loading, and stacking easy, while also protecting the system during handling. The pallets can be stacked two high for efficient storage.

How many people are needed to set up 100 meters of each system?

Both systems are designed for quick installation. Technically, one person can set it up alone. A team of four people can install 100 meters of the 90 cm system in approximately one hour, without tools or heavy machinery.

What is the cost difference per meter between the two systems?

The 90 cm system is more cost-effective per meter. The 120 cm system has a higher price per meter but provides extra protection and flexibility.

Can the same transport and storage containers be used for both systems?

No. Both systems are delivered on specially designed pallets that make transport, loading, and stacking easy, while also protecting the system during handling.

Is the 120 cm system always better if I don’t know the expected water level?

Not necessarily. The 120 cm system gives extra safety, but it also requires more storage space. Many customers choose a mix of 90 cm and 120 cm to balance flexibility, cost, and logistics.

How many times can the barriers be reused?

Haawal flood barriers are designed for long-term use. The protective membrane ensures that the frames remain clean after most flood events. Even if dirt accumulates, it will not affect the lifetime of the system. With proper storage, the barriers can be reused many times.

Can the systems be rented, or do they have to be purchased?

We currently only offer the system for purchase, but as our mission is to make efficient flood protection available for as many people as possible, we are interested in finding a solution that can work for your needs. Contact us and we can explore some new possibilities together.

Can the plastic membrane be reused?

No. The membrane becomes contaminated by floodwater and must be recycled after each flood event. Once it has been used, you can easily order a replacement from Haawal.

€348 per meter
With a protection height of up to 90 cm, this barrier is compact, efficient, and cost-effective. Ideal for moderate floods and requires 30% less storage than the 120 cm system.

€448 per meter
With a protection height of up to 120 cm, this barrier offers greater flexibility when water levels are uncertain or expected to be high. The 120 cm and 90 cm barrire can be combined to match areas with different flood heights.

Efficient storage and transport

The system is stored and transported very compactly. In the picture is an example  120 meters of the 90 cm barrier. Each pallet holds 16 modules (32) plates of the 90 cm barrier.

How it works

The Haawal Flood Barrier has an L-shaped design with a wall and a base plate, strengthened by a support wire. When floodwater pushes against the barrier, the pressure on the base plate becomes greater than on the wall. This creates a natural locking effect – what we call the “Book-end effect” – giving the barrier exceptional stability in real flood situations.

Adapts to any terrain

The free-standing modules and flexible membrane create a system that seals uneven ground. Modules can be angled to form curves and corners, while the membrane extends up to two meters in front of the barrier. As water rises, the membrane presses tightly against the surface, ensuring a secure seal.
