Frankfurt secures the city with 2300 meters of innovative flood protection from Haawal

On Saturday, April 18, the City of Frankfurt, together with the Fire Department, DLRG Frankfurt, and THW, conducted an exercise where the newly acquired Haawal system was deployed for the first time. Frankfurt has invested in a total of 2,300 meters of flood barrier and is now better prepared to protect the city from flooding from the Main.

 Usecase summary:
  • Use case: Excersice with Fire department

  • User: City of Frankfurt

  • How many meters: 2 300 meters

  • Terrain: Asphalt, cobblestones, concrete and grass

  • Protection height: 120 cm

  • System: Haawal flood barrier

  • Outcome: Key infrastructure and city protected

For several years, the city has been working to establish mobile flood protection for particularly vulnerable areas along the Main, totaling approximately 2 km. The system was selected following a public procurement process in 2025. Key criteria included minimal storage space requirements, rapid assembly and disassembly, and the reduction of waste after use. The height of the system was also a decisive factor.

Efficient Deployment and Strong Collaboration

Over 40 people participated in the exercise, which was carried out in brilliant spring weather along the Main. The focus was on the assembly of the barrier. For many of the emergency personnel, it was their first contact with the system, but with brief instructions, it could be set up quickly. The cooperation between the organizations worked very well, and both the setup and disassembly proceeded efficiently and smoothly.

The Haawal flood barrier is reusable. Once the flood fence is dismantled, it is stacked on pallets and transported back to storage.

Patrick Krieger from the Frankfurt Fire Department, who was responsible for the procurement of the system, was very satisfied with the exercise and the solution from Haawal:

“We selected the system after a thorough procurement process. Low storage requirements, fast handling, and little waste were decisive. It was impressive to see how easily the system works in practice.”
The Haawal flood barrier was also used to create a temporary water basin, demonstrating its flexibility for firefighting and emergency water supply.

For us at Haawal, it is particularly motivating to see how the system is used in exercises and how it contributes to a faster and more flexible flood protection solution compared to traditional methods. Contact Haawal to learn more about our flood barrier system.
